Cutural Diplomacy Faces As Today America's Foreign Policy!

In the article The Return of Cultural Diplomacy by Martha Bayles mentioned that the america's old popular culture of the entertainment as sexual movies should not export, because it is old idea and many countries in the world such as Rusia, India, Muslim countries, and ect... hate to watch it. So, instead of it, America should export the other entertainments that would have the richment of artistic and literarute heritage that the rest of the world unknown it such as the idea of exporting of the artist and writers tours, libraries, transportations and cuturally oriented international broadcasting. Those are should be exploding and exporting more serious forms of entertainment. THe "Dark Knight" and "Baywatch" which concerning more topersonal's spiritual life need to show the world how is such new investment in American of "smartpower" that challegnes to the world. It is addresing the main foreign policy that America today's facing.

  1. It an interesting point that you bring up Hong, but do you think foreign countries would be such avid watchers if America focused on its artists? I mean, when you think about it, sometimes these countries are watching shows such as "Baywatch" or "Sex in the City" because their own country would never condone social dramas as the problems when one sleeps with too many people. For example, a Moroccan series will never promote sex, or drugs, but more the forbidden love. And that could be the real reason why I like to watch something like "Sex in the City" because it is not a usual series plot.
Personally, if Morocco produces its own "Sex in the City" series, I probably would not bother watching the foreign version, because its already available in my country.
Yet, we all have to be careful and remember that what we watch on TV is not necessarily the culture of that country. The problem with America's constant theme of: sex, drugs and guns, produces a stereotype. Foreigners now believe that sex, guns and drugs is quick and easy in the United States. It is up to the watcher to be vigilant and tune in, and ask themselves if that is truly the culture.

  2. I think that foreign country would be focused on artists. As I understand that everything new from America, in my countries or some other Asian they are all interested in. So in order to have alternative in American culture then America should have new Diplomacy which helps America with new transition that bring up to the world its all cultures that American is not only having sex, guns or drugs through watching movies as part of popular culture. It is time for American to show the world with real artists who created all those pictures in movies, or beside it. So that, with artists the world will see America's culture better and more deeply. I hope our professor will give us better idea about this.

  3. I think that part of the intrigue is that it is so different from what the other country is used to. While "Baywatch" might not be the best example of television to be exported from the United States, it showed the beaches, etc. Though art is a crucial aspect to many cultures, I think that something more controversial would attract more fans. While I am not advocating that we export something that might jeopardize our standing with the country, I am sure that they would appreciate a breath of fresh air that might even provoke them to think about their own culture in a new way.
